A man serving 60 years for armed robbery is free after Jason Williams clears the way for release
For years, Yutico Briley’s appeals went nowhere.The 27-year-old seemed condemned to grow old in prison, sentenced to 60 years for the armed robbery of a Mid-City man despite his claims that a surveillance video would have proved his alibi if his lawyers had tracked it down in time.
But on Friday, Briley was a free man.
More than eight years after his arrest, Briley — a former gifted and talented student in high school — walked out of the Elayn Hunt Correctional Center in St. Gabriel and threw his arms around his mother, thanks to a newly elected district attorney and judge who hold sharply different views from their predecessors.
