As a county commissioner, a defense lawyer, and a professor of criminal law for over 20 years, he has used his experience to make the criminal justice system fairer and smarter for the people of Shelby County.
In the 10 years that Republican Amy Weirich has been in office, violent crime has risen steadily. It’s clear that harsh sentences and discriminatory policies aren’t making anyone safer. Amy Weirich also supported Tennessee’s controversial Fetal Assault Law, which declared the illegal use of drugs prior to birth a misdemeanor assault on the fetus, and which called for jail time unless the mother sought drug treatment. As the democratic nominee, Steve is running to change all that.
